Özet
Discourse differences in the news are becoming a debatable issue within the scope of media informing the society. One of these issues is the news of the earthquake that took place in Turkey on February 6, 2023 and whose effects were felt heavily in 10 provinces. After the earthquake, the media's way of serving the news and conveying it to the reader has become an important issue to be examined. The study covers the analysis of the earthquake news in Hürriyet and Sözcü newspapers through critical discourse analysis during the 7-day national mourning period announced on February 6. In this context, the news on the front pages of the printed versions of Hürriyet and Sözcü newspapers were analyzed with the method of Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse studies in order to reveal the differences in the content, design and rhetoric of the news between the newspapers. Under the title of “Discourse differences in earthquake news”, national scale similarities and differences of earthquake news are compared. It has been concluded that a different language, content and expression is used in the earthquake news in the newspapers that are the subject of the research. It has been revealed by the examined newspaper reports that there is a divergence over the adequacy or insufficiency of the interventions after the disaster. © 2023, Ankara University.
