Özet
The minarets, which are thought to be originated from towers builtfor communication or divine purposes, appear in many different forms,sizes, materials and decorative elements in widespread Islamic world. Theminarets, which are one of the indispensable elements of the mosques,have been studied in aspects of position, form, size, material anddecorative characteristics but with less emphasis on their dual functionsand design with another type of structure such as a fountain or sebil.In this study, it is aimed to introduce the northwest fountain imaretof Edirne Eski Camii combined with two different functions, minaret andfountain, in a single structure and to examine briefly the minarets thatcontain such water structures.Northwest minaret of Edirne Eski Camii is a unique example interms of region and architectural period. There is a fountain inside apointed arch, located at the base of the minaret with two balconies.According to sources, the minaret was added during the reign of II. Murat.This type of water feature hosting examples are also found in portal ofKonya Sahip Ata Camii, Bursa Timurtaş Camii, The northwest minaretof Bursa Ulu Camii, minarets of Veled-i Yaniç Camii in Bursa, İsa BeyFenari Camii in Bursa, Edirne Üç Şerefeli Camii, Muhaşşi Sinan Mosquein İstanbul, Yenikapı-Eski Camii in İstanköy (Kos), Yeni Cami in Mytilene(Lesvos), and Aziziye Mosque in Konya.It is possible to mention a separate group of terminology andtypology under the name of fountain minarets, if these dual-functioningexamples shaped on the basis of minaret and water structure can beextended.
