Öğe Neuroprotective effects of pre-ischemic exercise are linked to expression of NT-3/NT-4 and TrkB/TrkC in rats(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2023) Moghanlou, Abdorreza Eghbal; Yazdanian, Mohtaram; Roshani, Sajad; Demirli, Abdullah; Seydyousefi, Mehdi; Metz, Gerlinde A. S.; Faghfoori, ZeinabIntroduction and objective: Stroke causes irreversible damage, particularly to the hippocampus. Evidence suggests that exercise training may mitigate adverse structural and functional consequences of an ischemic lesion in the brain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of preconditioning exercise on expression of neurotrophic factor genes and proteins in hippocampalCA1 region and their relationship with sensorimotor recovery following global ischemia/reperfusion (Is/Re) injury in a rat model of stroke. Methods: Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to Exercise+Ischemia/Reperfusion (Ex+Is/Re),Con-trol+Ischemia/Reperfusion (Co+Is/Re), and Sham treatments. Rats in the exercise groups ran on a treadmill for 45 min/d for five days/week for 8 consecutive weeks prior to Is/Re lesion.Ischemia was induced by common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO). The ladder rung walking task was used to assess functional impairments and recovery following ischemic lesion.Tissue from hippocampal area CA1 was inspected for ischemia-induced cell loss and gene and protein expression linked to neurotrophins NT-3, NT-4, and their receptorsTrkB and TrkC. Results: CCAO caused hippocampal cell death in CA1 and resulted in significant sensori motor impairments in the ladder rung walking task. In contrast, pre-ischemic exercise considerably reduced cell death and supported sensorimotor recovery following CCAO.In addition, NT-3, NT-4,TrkB and TrkC gene expression and their protein levels were significantly increased inthe Ex+Is/Re group compared to Co+Is/Re (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The findings showed that pre-ischemic exercise can exert neuroprotective effects via NT-3 and NT-4 pathways against ischemia in hippocampal CA1 neurons and promote post-injury sensorimotor recovery.Öğe Habitual Caffeine Consumption and Training Status Affect the Ergogenicity of Acute Caffeine Intake on Exercise Performance(Sage Publications Inc, 2025) Khodadadi, Davar; Azimi, Farhad; Moghanlou, Abdorreza Eghbal; Gursoy, Recep; Demirli, Abdullah; Jalali, Parham; Behdari, RezaBackground: Acute caffeine ingestion can improve exercise performance. Interplay between caffeine habituation and training status on the performance-enhancing effect of caffeine is unknown. Hypothesis: Habitual caffeine consumption and training status affect the ergogenicity of pre-exercise caffeine intake on exercise performance. Study Design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, counterbalanced experimental design. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Methods: Eighty physically inactive men were randomized into 1 of 4 groups: caffeine supplementation (CAF), caffeine supplementation + exercise training (CAFEXE), placebo (PLA), and placebo + exercise training (PLAEXE); high-intensity interval training and caffeine were administered for 9 and 8 weeks, respectively. Data were collected pre-test, mid-test, post-test, and delayed post-test, each including 2 experiment sessions (3 mg/kg caffeine or placebo), with an additional experiment session post-test (6 mg/kg caffeine). In each experiment session, 45-min after consuming a placebo or caffeine, a 3-km running test and a Wingate power test were performed. Results: Pre-exercise ingestion of 3 mg/kg caffeine improved 3-km running time and mean power output (MPO) in all groups at all stages (P < 0.05); this effect was higher in trained than in untrained volunteers (P < 0.05). Habitual caffeine consumption reduced the ergogenic effect of caffeine in both aerobic and anaerobic trials (P < 0.05); 6 mg/kg caffeine enhanced this decrease only in CAFEXE (P < 0.05). Short-term caffeine withdrawal augmented the reduced ergogenic effect of caffeine on 3-km running performance and MPO in CAF and CAFEXE (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Habituation to caffeine and training status could partially influence the ergogenic effects of caffeine on exercise performance.Öğe Comparative analysis of external load in small-sided games versus official matches among professional football players(Iermakov S S, 2024) Kaya, Kaan; Gurol, Baris; Tarakci, SelcukBackground and Study Aim. Coaches frequently use small-sided games with numerical inequalities. However, it is unclear if these games accurately represent official matches. This study aims to identify the differences in external load between small-sided games and official matches among professional soccer players, incorporating the variance due to positional roles. Material and Methods. The analysis used GPS data collected from 20 professional football players from Turkish Super League club's first team during the 2023-2024 season. The small-sided games (SSGs) were structured as 4vs4+3, including three joker players. Players were divided into five groups based on their field positions: central defenders, fullbacks, midfielders, wingers, and forwards. The GPS metrics recorded included total distance (m), moderate-intensity running distance (16-20 km/h), high-intensity running distance (20-25 km/h), sprint distance (>25 km/h), the number of accelerations and decelerations, and high metabolic power distance, both in absolute and relative terms. Furthermore, the SSGs were compared based on the number of days prior to official matches when they were conducted. Results. The findings revealed that the highest values for all external load variables were recorded 4 to 5 days before official matches (p<0.001). However, the per-minute acceleration rate (2.5003 +/- 1.09288) and deceleration rate (2.4971 +/- 1.10671) in the SSGs were significantly higher than those observed in official matches (p<0.001). Conclusions. Coaches and conditioning trainers aiming to simulate match conditions in training should consider using 4vs4+3 SSGs with joker players more tactically. This approach is especially effective for enhancing possession, creating numerical superiority, and focusing on performance metrics such as acceleration and deceleration.Öğe Evaluation of repeated sprint test protocols used in soccer with a global positioning system(Iermakov S S, 2022) Kaya, Kaan; Gurol, BarisBackground and Study Aim Material and Methods The aim of the research is to evaluate the 7x34.2 m Repeated Straight Sprint Test (RSST) and 7x34.2 m Repeated Change of Direction Sprint Test (RCST), which are used for improvement, measurement, and evaluation of repeated sprint ability, by using Global Positioning System (GPS). Twenty-two professional soccer players participated in the research voluntarily. Internal and external load data were examined comparatively by using data as before and after the repeated sprint tests. External load data measured by 10 Hz GPS. Results When the findings of the research are examined, it is seen that values of blood lactate concentrations which are taken after three and five minutes of the RCST are significantly higher than RSST protocol (p < 0.001***, p = 0.042*, respectively). In the study, the value of lactate which is taken five minutes after the RSST was measured as 9.60 +/- 2.65 mM, while the value which is taken three minutes after RCST was measured as 9.75 +/- 2.51 mM. Nevertheless, whereas there was a difference between the two tests in terms of lactate values, no significant difference was found in terms of perceived exertion. Conclusions As a conclusion, according to the analyzes made after the RCST and RSST, we can say that the internal and external load performances of the athletes were very different. It has been observed that coaches, athletes, and practitioners can use two different test protocols for different objectives according to the purposes they set.Öğe Association between body composition, physical activity level and Illinois agility test performance in young males and females(Iermakov S S, 2022) Subak, Erdem; Kaya, Kaan; Viga, Saban O.; Ocak, Muhammed H.; Ağaoğlu, Ceren; Bekiroglu, AsliBackground and Study Aim Agility performance, which is a skill related to fast change of direction, explosiveness, and quickness, is a vital performance component for team sports. The study cohort encompasses a total of 486 participants, comprising 194 females and 292 males, pursuing studies in physical education and sports sciences across higher education institutions situated in the Marmara region during the 2023-2024 academic session. In the study's framework, an 8-item questionnaire capturing personal information alongside the Attitudes Scale towards Individuals with Disabilities (YEKYTÖ) were deployed to discern the factors shaping participants' attitudes. YEKYTÖ, crafted by Yuker and Block (1986) and linguistically tailored by Özyürek (2006), served as the instrument. Statistical analysis of the data was executed employing the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 25.0 software suite. Diagnostic assessments including Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests were employed to ascertain the normal distribution of data, affirming its adherence to normalcy (p>0.0001). Consequently, the Student t-test was employed for bivariate analyses, while ANOVA was leveraged for multivariate assessments. Findings revealed the salience of gender dynamics in shaping the attitudes of undergraduate students in physical education and sports sciences towards individuals with special needs, with a noticeable bias towards male participants. Furthermore, it was deduced that students enrolled in sports management programs and those in their inaugural year exhibited higher aggregate scores in attitudes towards individuals with special needs. Nevertheless, no statistically significant disparities were observed between total attitude scores and variables such as engagement in courses tailored for individuals with special needs, hands-on experience with such individuals, or personal acquaintance with individuals having special needs (p>0.05).Öğe Bibliometric Analysis of Postgraduate Theses on Swimming in Türkiye(Yalova University, 2024) Akgün, GökçeThe research aims to analyze postgraduate theses on swimming in Türkiye.
