Öğe Decreasing myocardial estrogen receptors and antioxidant activity may be responsible for increasing ischemia- and reperfusion-induced ventricular arrhythmia in older female rats(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2021) Bozdogan, Omer; Bozcaarmutlu, Azra; Kaya, Salih Tunc; Sapmaz, Canan; Ozarslan, Talat Ogulcan; Eksioglu, Didem; Yasar, SelcukAims: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between ischemia- and reperfusion-induced arrhythmia and blood serum estrogen levels, myocardial estrogen receptor levels, antioxidant enzyme activities, and the effects of the estrogen receptor blocker, fulvestrant (ICI 182 780). Main methods: A total of 102 female Sprague-Dawley rats of different ages (2-3, 6-7, 14-15, and 20-21 months) were used in this study. Myocardial ischemia was produced by ligation of the descending branch of the left anterior descending coronary artery, and reperfusion was produced by releasing this artery. An electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure were recorded for 6 min of ischemia and 6 min of reperfusion. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha), and estrogen receptor beta (ER beta) in myocardial tissue and 17 beta-estradiol (E2) in blood serum were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results were compared using a Mann-Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and a student's t-test. Key findings: It is not the changes in serum estrogen levels but the decreasing myocardial estrogen receptors and antioxidant activities that could be responsible for the occurrence of more severe arrhythmia in response to reperfusion in older female rats. Significance: The death rate due to a heart attack in younger men is higher than in women. However, it equalizes after the menopausal stage in women. In this study, the reason for the increasing sudden post-menopausal death rate in women was investigated experimentally.Öğe DNA repair gene OGG1 polymorphism and its relation with oxidative DNA damage in patients with Alzheimer's disease(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2019) Dincer, Yildiz; Akkaya, Caglayan; Mutlu, Tuba; Yavuzer, Serap; Erkol, Gokhan; Bozluolcay, Melda; Guven, MehmetThere is considerable evidence that oxidative DNA damage is increased, DNA repair capacity is decreased in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Base excision repair is the major pathway in removal of oxidative DNA damage. 8-oxo-deoxyguanosine DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1) is the enzyme which is involved in the first step of this repair process. Alterations in DNA repair capacity may be related with polymorphisms in DNA repair genes. In order to investigate the effect of OGG1 Ser326Cys polymorphism on oxidative DNA damage level, OGG1 genotyping was performed, basal and oxidative DNA damage in lymphocytes and 8-OHdG level in plasma were examined in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Basal and oxidative DNA damage and 8-OHdG level were measured by OGG1-modified comet assay and enzyme-linked immunoassay, respectively. OGG1 genotyping was performed by polymerase chain reaction- restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. Basal and oxidative DNA damage and plasma 8-OHdG levels were found to be higher in the Alzheimer's disease group than those in the control group (P < 0.001). In the Alzheimer's disease group, the levels of oxidative DNA damage was higher in the patients having OGG1 (Ser326Cys + Cys326Cys) genotype than those in the patients having OGG1 Ser326Ser genotype. It was concluded that oxidative DNA damage is increased in patients with Alzheimer's disease and OGG1 Ser326Cys polymorphism may be responsible for this increase.Öğe Drought assessment in the northeastern Aras Basin using multi-parameter aggregate drought index and innovative polygon trend analysis(Springer Heidelberg, 2025) Topcu, Emre; Karacor, Fatih; Cirag, Burak; Taskolu, Ilteris; Acar, ResatDrought is a climate phenomenon that can have serious consequences for all living things. The widespread occurrence of extreme drought and extreme precipitation conditions in recent years has increased the importance of drought studies. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive drought analysis using 11 meteorological parameters for the period 1970-2023 at Ardahan, I & gbreve;d & imath;r, and Kars meteorological stations in the region of T & uuml;rkiye, which is located in the Northeast of the Aras Basin and known for its harsh winter conditions. Drought analysis was carried out with the Aggregate Drought Index (ADI) method and the effects of climate change on parameters such as temperature, precipitation, snow water equivalent (SWE), and streamflow in the region were analyzed. As a result of the study, with the use of ADI and IPTA methods, drought trends in Aras Basin, especially in the winter and summer seasons, were clearly seen. It can be said that near-normal conditions are experienced the most with a frequency of approximately 20%. In addition to the ADI analysis, Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Streamflow Drought Index (SDI), and Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) methods were also applied; however, it was observed that these indexes do not always show full agreement with the ADI and exhibit similar trends in some drought periods. These results show that choosing the right indexes is of great importance for drought analysis and that indexes suitable for regional climate characteristics will give more reliable results.Öğe Nexus between environmental innovation and ecological footprint in OECD countries: is there an environmental rebound effect?(Springer, 2024) Aydin, Celil; Esen, Omer; Cetintas, YagmurThis study empirically examines the effect of environmental innovation on ecological footprint using a panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model for 33 OECD countries, over the period 1995-2019. The findings indicate that a rebound effect occurs when the level of environmental innovation surpasses the calculated threshold level (14.254%), suggesting that environmental innovations exert pressure on the environment. Existing empirical results point to a rebound effect, which refers to offsetting the gains from environmental innovation by channeling them into production and consumption.Öğe The Popularity of the Biologically-Based Therapies During Coronavirus Pandemic Among the Google Users in the USA, UK, Germany, Italy and France(Churchill Livingstone, 2021) Gunalan, Elif; Cebiog, Irem Kaya; Conak, OzgeObject: The aim of this retrospective infodemiological study was to evaluate people?s interests in biologicallybased (B-B) complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies such as herbs, foods, and supplements during the coronavirus pandemic via analysis of Google search engine statistics. These changes may have the potential to be biomarkers for the effectiveness of radiotherapy in breast cancer.Öğe Does tour guides' ethical behavior matter for tourists' revisit and recommendation intentions? Examining with a gender perspective(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2024) Eren, Asli Sultan; Dedeoglu, Bekir Bora; Okumus, FevziPurpose - This study aims to investigate the impact of tour guides' ethical behavior on tourist satisfaction, intention to revisit and to recommend and examine whether gender plays a moderating role in these relationships. Design/methodology/approach - The study was conducted in the Cappadocia Destination in Turkiye. A total of 910 participants were included in the study. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method was used to examine the research model in this study. Findings - The study results indicate that the ethical behavior of tour guides has a significant impact on tourists' satisfaction with the tour, satisfaction with the tour guide, recommendation intention and revisit intention. Furthermore, the study found that the effect of ethical behavior on these outcomes was more pronounced among male tourists than female tourists. Research limitations/implications - Despite the tourists' satisfaction, they may want to remember the experience using mental time travel, and they may fear not having the same positive experience during any revisits. Tour guides should be given continuous training on the concept of professional ethics throughout their education and professional life. The factors causing higher ethical perceptions in male tourists than female tourists may be examined in further studies (i.e. marital status). Originality/value - The research fills an important gap in the literature by shedding light on the significance of ethical behavior in the context of tour guides, a topic that has received relatively little attention. In particular, the results obtained reveal the originality of the study. Besides that, investigating the moderating role of gender and determining the behavioral intentions of male and female individuals according to the ethical behaviors of tour guides are important for the future of Cappadocia tourism.Öğe The Relationship Between Discomfort Intolerance And the Fear Of Self-Injection And Testing In Patients With Diabetes Using Insulin: A Cross-Sectional Study(Wiley, 2024) Sahin, Nilhan Toyer; Ek, Hulya; Pehlivan, SedaBackground: Diabetes is a global problem. Diabetes nurses, in particular, take great responsibility in reducing and controlling the fears of individuals using insulin and increasing their capacity to tolerate discomfort. Aim: This study was conducted to examine the effects of the capacity to tolerate discomfort on the fear of self-injection and the status of testing blood glucose levels in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes using insulin. MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2022 and February 2023 with 320 adult patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes using insulin who were followed up in the Endocrinology and Internal Medicine Clinics of a university hospital in Turkey. The data analysis process included analyses of the frequency, independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, the Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Pearson's correlation analysis. Data were analysed using the IBM SPSS v27.0 software, considering alpha as 0.05. Results: The mean total Discomfort Intolerance Scale score of the patients was 22.78 +/- 6.74, and the mean Fear of Self-Injecting and self-testing was 21.1 +/- 6.7. A negative significant correlation was found between the discomfort intolerance levels of the patients and their levels of fear of self-injection and self-testing (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Individuals with a higher capacity to tolerate discomfort have lower levels of fear of self-testing and self-injection. Therefore, the fear of self-testing and self-injection in patients using insulin injections may affect diabetes self-management. Relevance to Clinical PracticeIndividuals with low tolerance for discomfort should be identified, interventions to increase tolerance in individuals at risk should be planned, and diabetes self-management should be better supported. Reporting MethodThe reporting of the results of the study adhered to the STROBE guidelines.Öğe Determination of the effects of steaming and blanching pre-treatment processes on the physicochemical properties, antioxidant activities, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and S-allyl cysteine contents of black garlic(Akademiai Kiado Zrt, 2025) Binici, H. I.; Sat, I. G.; Yilmaz, B.This study investigated the effects of steaming and blanching pre-treatments on the physicochemical properties, bioactive compound content, and antioxidant activity of black garlic during fermentation. Moisture content and pH decreased over fermentation time, while titratable acidity increased. Pre-treatments enhanced the total phenolic, flavonoid, and flavonol contents, as well as antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS+, FRAP), compared to control samples, with steaming pre-treatment being more effective than boiling. 5-HMF and S-allyl cysteine (SAC) levels were optimised with pre-treatments, promoting the formation of bioactive compounds. These methods offer an efficient, cost-effective way to enhance black garlic production, shorten processing times, and improve its nutritional and economic value.Öğe Processing-induced modifications in bioactive compounds of black garlic: a comparative analysis with white garlic(Codon Publications, 2025) Binici, Halil İbrahim; Savas, Adem; Erim, BurakThis study aimed to examine the differences in chemical and bioactive components between black garlic and white garlic under various processing conditions. The processing conditions significantly lowered the pH of black garlic while increasing its total acidity and organic acid levels, with citric acid being the dominant organic acid. Total phenolic compounds (TPC) and antioxidant activity in black garlic increased as a result of processing conditions. Notably, aging caused a significant increase in the levels of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC). Mineral analyses showed that magnesium and selenium levels in black garlic rose with extended aging. Correlation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that the health-beneficial components of black garlic were significantly enhanced through processing, differentiating it from white garlic.Öğe Change.org: The Problem of Subaltern in Women and Digital Activism in New Media as an Alternative(Istanbul Univ, 2017) Kiraz, Selin; Kestel, SeyraFrom a historical perspective, the concept of subaltern was first introduced by Antonio Gramsci in 1930 in relation to hegemony. However, the present day definition of subaltern includes people who are termed oppressed or the other, and their voices are unheard in society. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's term, the other is another name that makes this issue controversial. Gramsci and Spivak's views on this subject are not only associated with each person but also separated at certain points. According to Spivak, the main problem is that subalterns can-not speak; in other words, their voices cannot be heard. In this context, when we use the concept of subaltern, the biggest issue we are facing is the problems faced by women, which in turn arise from the hegemonic inequality caused by gender. A woman can be identified as a subaltern because of social gender axis and counter-hegemony. New communication technologies have broadened the counter-hegemony areas of subalterns, while also ensuring the digital activism movements. For instance, with the widespread use of new communication technologies, almost everyone is able to use these technologies, and those who can-not physically have a power of opposition to the dominant ideology can create new formations through these channels. This article focuses on the campaigns related to women, which reflect the counter-hegemony efforts of subalterns and the effectiveness of such efforts in terms of digital activism that appears in www.change.org. In this study, women's campaigns, launched in Turkey between January 1, 2016 and May 1, 2017 on change.org, were examined through content analysis and their results were evaluated.Öğe Examples of Alam 19??-Century Ottoman Architecture Found in Surici(Istanbul Univ, Research Inst Turkology, Dept Art History, 2023) Sarimese, FatihThe alams [finials] placed on the tops of qubba, vaults, and cones used as roofs in traditional architecture developed in accordance with the architecture of the period in which they were built. The alam, whose use in Turkish art dates back to pre-Islamic times, appears to have been used for the first time in Turkish and Islamic architecture during the Kara-Khanid Khanate. The alams made of marble and metal materials continued to develop in Anatolia with the Seljuks and Principalities. During the Ottoman period, the alams reached their peak with the examples in Istanbul and became the complementary and indispensable element on top of the qubba. In the early Ottoman architecture in Istanbul, alams with a crescent shape atop were generally preferred. The appearance of these alams also changed alongside the changes in the style of architectural structures. Under the influence of the Baroque style in the 18th century, the points of the crescent alams were bent outwards and began to turn into a design reminiscent of a horn shape. The Ottoman style, especially during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, affected the alams in the 19th century. In addition, designs involving a crescent and radial arrangement were used together with the crescent and star in this period. The status of the person who had the structure built, the increase in foreign influences in architecture, and the absence of a certain unity of style unity can be said to have been effective in the choice of alam. This effect enabled alams to be made in the same period in different styles. This study focuses on the alams of 14 different structures belonging to the 19th century that are representative of different styles; examines the designs, materials, and techniques; and has determined the presence of a stylistic unity between the buildings and their alams.Öğe Regenerative medicine in surgery: stem cells and exosome applications(Mexican Acad Surgery, 2025) Azizoglu, Mustafa; Zorba-Yildiz, Asli P.; Yilmaz, Hazal; Yurtbay, Goncagul; Catli, Gonul; Yavuz, Giray; Yavas, Arzu D.This review outlines the role of regenerative medicine in surgical applications, focusing on stem cells and exosomes. Among the most important features of stem cells are their unique ability to differentiate into various cell types, which make them stand out in regeneration and repair. Recent advances highlight the effectiveness of not only these cells themselves but also the exosomes, the nano-sized extracellular vesicles they produce, in this regeneration. On the other hand, exosomes assure additional advantages concerning low immunogenicity and high bioavailability but have raised problems in standardization and safety. In fact, the introduction of these stem cell and exosome technologies is changing the management of surgical pathologies and offering hope for diseases hitherto considered incurable. In this review, the use of stem cell therapies in various surgical diseases is categorized and examined, their clinical importance is emphasized, and the deficiencies in research studies are indicated. Therefore, the results are promising for treatments, but more standardized protocols and expanded research on long-term safety and effectiveness are needed.Öğe A Health-Sector-Specific Occupational Health and Safety Management System Model(MDPI, 2025) Yesilgoz, Pinar; Arga, Kazim YalcinBackground/Objectives: The health sector is one of the most important sectors, and occupational accidents and occupational diseases that health workers are exposed to are more important compared to those in other sectors. Especially, the increase in health and safety problems faced by hospital workers necessitates the development of an occupational health and safety (OHS) management system model specific to the health sector. Existing health and safety management systems generally do not sufficiently take sectoral dynamics into account, and the adaptation of these standards to the sectors is left to the individual efforts of the users. This situation leads to management systems that lack a sector-specific approach and do not adopt a common language and methodology. Methods: The aim of this study was to create an OHS management system specific to the health sector. While developing the model, AHP and DEMATEL, which are multi-criteria decision-making methods that help people to make complex decisions, were used. Results: By applying these methods, important criteria for the proposed model were determined. The criteria, including Improvement of the management system of the health institution, Determination of control measures, Assessment of risks specific to the health institution, Identifying hazards specific to the health institution and Determining its context, have been determined as priority criteria and weighted using the AHP and DEMATEL methods. Conclusions: As a result of the findings of this research, designing a unique occupational health and safety (OHS) management system that takes into account the dynamics of the health sector will contribute to the prevention of occupational accidents and occupational diseases in the health sector.Öğe EVALUATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BRICOLAGE AND SELF-EFFICACY IN NURSING STUDENTS(Termedia Publishing House Ltd, 2024) Sahin, Nilhan Toyer; Karan, Tugba; Tasan, NazanBackground. Non-Muslims were dominated and Greek and Armenian communities had churches in Yenikoy. Armenian Surp Asdvadzadzin Church and Complex, is a significant one of those churches and it was devoted to the Virgin Mary. The complex was built in the middle of 18th century first and it was reconstructed exactly the same with its current situation in 1834. The complex was formed around a basilica planned church with a single nave in the center. There is a baptism room and a pastaphorion room on the sides of the Church and a small graveyard in the backyard. There is a cistern at the entry of the surrounding walls of the church, and a little bit further located the foundation building. There are fountains is several places. While the parsonage is in the south of the Church, Mamigonyan School, a big part of which could not reach today, is located in the south. Surp Asdvadzadzin Complex is an example of the application of Turkish Islamic social complex in a non-Muslim construction complex. The complex was planned to meet the needs of the surrounding community and today it renders services to the Gregorian Armenians. Thanks to the restoration works performed in 2005- 2006, it is in a very good condition today. Recently restoration works have been started for Mamigonyan School and the parsonage. The written sources about Armenian Surp Asdvadzdzin Complex, which is similar to Turkish Islamic social complexes, are mainly about the church. In this paper, church and other constructions in the complex, which are in integrity from architectural aspects, are discussed under different headings.
