Öğe An assessment on the news about the tourism industry during the COVID-19 pandemic(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2022) Sengel, Umit; Cevrimkaya, Mustafa; Genc, Gokhan; Iskin, Merve; Zengin, Burhanettin; Sariisik, MehmetPurpose - This study examines the relationship of COVID-19 with the tourism industry in the context of news coverage. More specifically, this study analyzes the relationship between COVID-19 and subsectors of tourism throughout different periods of the pandemic. Design/methodology/approach - Qualitative research techniques were applied, and content analysis used, to analyze the collected data. The news contents obtained cover two one-week periods: March 5-12, 2020, and April 5-12, 2020. The content analysis method and MAXQDA program were used to analyze the data. Findings - The research findings reveal that tourism and news related to COVID-19 were heavily connected with the travel industry during March 5-12, 2020, with concentrations slightly favoring the hospitality industry. In the period of April 5-12, 2020, the strong relationship between tourism and travel continued. During the latter period, the hospitality and the events industries were both subjects of relevant news. Research limitations/implications - This study examined the news during a short period of time. In addition, the sample of the study does not represent all news in all media. Examining different media outlets and different news cycles may produce different results. Originality/value - This is one of the first studies to examine the relationship between the pandemic and the tourism industry from a macro perspective in the context of news coverage. The study provides implications for policy-makers, tourism planners and industry.Öğe TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN LITERARY WORKS: THE NOVEL A MEMENTO FOR ISTANBUL(Univ Federal Juiz Fora, Campus Univ, 2019) Sengel, Umit; Iskin, Merve; Zengin, Burhanettin; Sariisik, MehmetPromotions of the destinations are seen in many written and visual platforms. Literature is one of them. Since the places where the events occur in many of the literary works are also tourist destinations, these works can make significant contributions to the promotion of the destinations. In the context of interdisciplinary studies, it is important to conduct studies on the interaction of tourism and literature. In the light of this information, it is aimed to examine the destination attraction elements mentioned in the literary works. In this context, the novel of Ahmet Umit titled A Memento for Istanbul was examined. The novel was read simultaneously by the researchers who carried out the study. In the literary work examined, it was found that there are descriptions and information that promote Istanbul as a tourist destination. Afterwards, descriptions and information determined by different researchers were compared and the common ones were included in the research. According to the results of the study, it is observed that the historical events and artifacts, natural beauties, accessibility, food&beverage and accommodation in Istanbul are handled strongly in the context of destination attractiveness. This study shows that tourist destinations in literary works are processed in the context of destination attractiveness. In this aspect, it can be stated that the novels contribute to the promotion of tourist destinations.Öğe Turizm Öğrencilerinin Mesleki Beklenti, Mesleki Bağlılık ve Meslek Değiştirme Eğilimleri Üzerine Bir Araştırma(Kocaeli Üniversitesi, 2020) Şengel, Ümit; Zengin, Burhanettin; Işkın, MerveGeçmişten bugüne turizm endüstrisinde yaşanan gelişmelerle birlikte, turizm eğitimi veren kurumlarda da artışlar meydana gelmiştir. Ancak bu eğitim kurumlarını tercih eden öğrenciler zamanla bölüm veya meslek değiştirmeye yönelmektedir. Bu çalışmada, turizm öğrencilerinin mesleki beklenti, mesleki bağlılık ve meslek değiştirme eğilimlerinin belirlenmesi, bu kavramları belirleyen betimleyici değişkenlerin ortaya konması ve kavramların ilişki düzeylerinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Nicel araştırma tekniklerinin kullanıldığı mevcut çalışmada, veri toplama aracı olarak anket tekniğinden yararlanılmıştır. Sakarya Üniversitesi turizm işletmeciliği bölümü öğrencilerinden elde edilen 320 anket analize tabi tutulmuştur. Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre cinsiyet, yaş, ailede turizm eğitimi alan bireylerin olup olmaması ve ebeveynlerin meslekleri öğrencilerin turizm öğrencilerinin meslekleri ile ilgili beklenti bağımlılık ve değiştirme eğilimlerinde belirleyici olabilmektedir. Ayrıca bu üç kavram arasında belli düzeylerde korelasyonlar da tespit edilmiştir.
