Öğe An insight into the personal and interpersonal causes of digital burnout: Adverse social psychology in second language acquisition(IGI Global, 2023) Kurt, AliDigital burnout in education emerged as a contemporary issue that has become a significant concern for language teachers and students. Digital burnout is not only limited to the context of a global health crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, but may also manifest in any personal breakdowns. The AHP analysis identified the top three factors that contribute to digital burnout in second language acquisition (SLA), such as constant access to the internet, pandemic-related psychological breakdown, and information overload. The study also revealed socially adverse emotional contagion as the fourth most influential factor; that is, when students see their peers and social circles as unmotivated and not engaging in meaningful activities, their own motivation tends to decline. As the second social dynamic, the lack of real face-to-face interaction, also constitutes the seventh factor overall contributing to digital burnout. Hence, a balanced presentation of online and inperson learning in all scenarios, if possible, is the best approach that aligns with human nature and thoroughly serves SLA. © 2023, IGI Global.Öğe From digital obsession to digital burnout in second language acquisition(IGI Global, 2023) Kurt, AliThe COVID-19 pandemic caused an augmented reliance on technology for second language acquisition (SLA). Although digital technologies have proven beneficial in language learning, their excessive use has led to digital burnout among students. This systematic review analyzes the existing research regarding digital burnout in SLA, exploring symptoms, consequences, and coping strategies. Digital burnout has various symptoms, such as decreased motivation and performance, mental fatigue, and physical health problems. Some of the bad effects are low linguistic development, diminished engagement, and negative emotional responses. The review also suggests strategies to avoid digital burnout, such as establishing sound study plans, prioritizing self-care, and establishing clear boundaries between academic and personal physical areas. As a reverse trend, simplicity in SLA with more realtime learning and balanced digitalization should be encouraged, as it brings focus, clarity, and less stress to our lives, creating more time and freedom for personal pursuits and promoting self-sustainability. © 2023, IGI Global.Öğe From error analysis to effective writing outputs: An EAP process-oriented and social-constructivist perspective(IGI Global, 2023) Kurt, AliThis chapter investigates the overlap between error analysis, process-oriented writing, and a social constructivist approach to teaching and their effects on foreign language technical writing. The study is significant for its unique emphasis on the coalescence of these three domains, which is natural yet rare in research. Data collection tools included interviews, document analysis, and random participant observation. Error analysis was also used as a methodological approach to examine longitudinal data from a cohort of B1-level English language learners. The initial technical writing work revealed a failure to adopt the nature, structure, and content of technical writing. Yet, later-produced works exhibited better development over time after the interventions, which were full of specific strategies. By validating the synergy in error correction between process writing, which clears clouded minds with its precise step-by-step layout, and social constructivism, which helps generate meaning and cooperate, the study concludes the necessity of such integration into technical writing classes. © 2023 by IGI Global. The relationship between Foreign Language Learning (FLT) and sociolinguistics is significant in various ways. Sociolinguistics is highly connected to second language acquisition (SLA) to the extent that it intensely highlights an understanding of the process of language acquisition. This can be done by providing a broader and more comprehensive aspect of language, either at a verbal or non-verbal level (Rogen, 2002). This is because what a native speaker says may be above the actual meaning. Thus, as well as what is uttered, knowing with whom, where, when, and how to talk (discourse) is a key conceptual issue for a learner to pick out the hidden meaning behind (Kramsch, 1991). This leads the learner to decipher the implications—a more nuanced level of understanding of what is said. Sociolinguistics also highlights another key concept, ‘culture’ where a language comes alive. So, this discipline offers learners a high degree of awareness of "sociolinguistic competence", through which a foreign language learner gets exposed while acquiring values and beliefs in a particular society. Additionally, sociolinguistics facilitates contextual learning, which enables them to efficiently communicate in line with given situations and at an appropriate level of language. This is precisely what Speech Act Theory, which is profoundly founded on communicative competence, including such daily life uses as inviting, ordering, congratulating, and so on, suggests. This study highlights the notion that sociolinguistics enables foreign language learners to acquire a target language realistically and functionally, not only at the word and sentence levels but also at contextual levels. Hence, sociolinguistics allows learners to interact with native speakers through oral and written communication with more confidence.
